في هذا الكتاب والذي يصف عنوانه مضمونه، يحكي لنا المؤلف أبو هلال العسكري، عن أول من سن الدية مائة من الإبل وهو عبدالمطلب، وأول ما عظم أمر قريش فسميت آل الله وقرابينه، وأول من أوقد النار بالمزدلة حتى يرها من يندفع ممن عرفة فهي توقد إلى الآن، وهو قصي، وأول من قطع في السرقة الوليد بن المغيرة، وأول من نسأ النسيئ وهو القلمس، وأول من بوب بمكة بابا وو حاطب بن بلتعة، وأول من سقف بها بيتا، وأول ما قيل الجاهلية، وأول ما خطب على العصا والراحلة، وأول من رجم في الزنا، وأول من حكم أن الولد للفراش، وأول من اتخذ الرحال العلافية، وأول من وضع الكتاب العربي، وأول من اتخذ أسند الحديد ، وأول من حرم القمار، وأول من جلبت له السيوف، وأول من كتب بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم وهو سيدنا محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، وأول من ختم الكتاب من قريش وأهل الحجاز، وأول لواء عقده، وأول خمس خمسه، وأول ما قاتل جمهور المشركين وهزمهم، وأول مما ظهر الإسلام بمكة وأقيمت الصلاة علانية، وأول من سن قيام شهر رمضان، وأول من عاقب على الهجاء، وغير ذلك من الأوائل في الجاهلية قبل الإسلام وبعده.
