كتاب من أدب السيرة الذاتية، يتحدث فيه روسو عن ثلاثة وخمسين سنة من حياته، بدأ بتأليفه سنة 1765 وانتهى سنة 1769، لكن الكتاب لم ينشر إلا بعد أربع سنوات من وفاته.
يعتبر جان جاك روسو كاتبًا وأديبًا وفيلسوفًا وعالم نبات جنيفي، من أهم كتّاب عصر التنوير، وهي فترة من التاريخ الأوروبي، امتدت من أواخر القرن السابع عشر إلى أواخر القرن الثامن عشر الميلاديين، ساعدت فلسفة روسو في تشكيل الأحداث السياسية، التي أدت إلى قيام الثورة الفرنسية، إذ أثرت أعماله في التعليم والأدب والسياسة.
كان في اختيار روسو لعنوان الكتاب "اعترافات" جرأة في كسر الأيقونة المهابة، على حد قول البعض، فستجد عند قراءتك لاعترافاته بحثه الدائم عن الإنسانية والتسامح طوال رحلة حياته.
جاءت اعترافاته صريحة؛ فأحيانًا كان يشوبها جلد الذات والاعتذار كما سنجد في موقفه عندما اتهم بالسرقة في صغره، وأحيانًا أخرى يشوبها الشعور بالاضطهاد حين حاربته السلطة وتخلى عنه المقربون، كما كان حال أغلب الفلاسفة والتنويريين في ذلك العصر.
والكتاب يشبه الأبيات التي نقشت على منزله الذي أقام فيه مع مدام دي فاران:
أيها المأوى الذي شغله جان جاك، إنك لتذكرني بعبقريته وحبه للعزلة، وبتحمسه وحميته، وبمصائبه وطيشه.
