إن البحث في ركام النصوص المتوافرة والحفر في طبقات الخطاب، أي خطاب، وتفكيك آليات تشكله، من شأنه أن يحيد المنطلقات الماقبلية التي قد تواصل بصورة مقصودة أو غير مقصودة حجب الحقائق الإبستمولوجية والانتروبولوجية التي أسست لظاهرة التعدد الثقافي في الإسلام.
ومن هنا لا يهدف هذا البحث إضافة دراسة "وصفية" أخرى إلى مجموع الدراسات التي اعتنت بالتعريف بالخوارج، في الفكر والتاريخ الإسلامي، لأن ما سجل منها في هذا الصدد متعدد ويكمل بعضه بعضاً، على تغيره وتناقضه أحياناً.
إن ما نرومه في هذا البحث هو تغيير زاوية النظر إلى التجربة الخارجية باعتبارها وجهاً من أوجه التعدد الثقافي والانتروبولوجي للإسلام. فنسعى من خلال تحليل الخطاب الخارجي وتفكيكه والكشف عن مرجعيته التاريخية، إلى تفسير عوامل انتشار هذه التجربة في الواقع لفترات طويلة نسبياً، وفهم عوامل "قوة الانتماء" التي تنتظم المجموعة الممارسة لها، ولا سيما اعتقادها بأنها تفهم الإسلام أصح فهم وتمارسه أصوب ممارسة، شأنها شأن أي مجموعة أخرى داخل الدائرة الثقافية المشتركة من حيث عجزها جميعاً عن الفكاك من هيمنة صيغ التفضيل على خطاباتها، ومن سيطرة هاجس التفرد على وعيها بذاتها.
