إنّ تأصيل التسامح في التراث ليس عملاً إسقاطياً ولا تبريريّاً، بل هو كشفٌ عمّا وُجد فعلاً، وإعادةُ رسمٍ لصورة فُقدت أجزاء هامّة منها.
ومبدأ التسامح لم يتجلّ فقط في المستوى الفكريّ، بل كانت له ترجمات عمليّة في صنف من السياسات مميّز في تاريخ الدولة.
على أنّه وجب التنبيه من الناحية الإصطلاحيّة إلى أنّه لم يكن مصطلح "التسامح" يختزل مختلف الدلالات المقترنة بمبدأ التسامح، بل كانت هناك شبكة من الكلمات التي تحيل على بعضها البعض بكيفيّة ترتقي أحياناً إلى درجة الإصطلاح... ونجد ما ينهض بهذه الدلالات موزّعاً بين عبارات ومصطلحات أخرى، من قبيل: "الوفاق، المسامحة، التسالم، العدل، التفهّم، التحابّ".
ونحن نرى، في حدود الفترة التي ندرسها وهي القرنان الثاني والثالث للهجرة، أن تجربتيْن سياسيّتين قامتا فعلاً على مبدأ التسامح بالمفهوم الممتاح عصرئذ، وهما تجربة البرامكة في عهد هارون الرشيد، وتجربة المأمون.
ولئن استعملنا اسمَيْ "برامكة" و "مأمون"، للبحث في خصوصيّة هذه التجارب، فإنّ المسألة تتجاوز الإختيارات الفرديّة وحتّى الفئويّة، لتضرب بأسباب في توجّه إجتماعي ثقافيّ تَوفّر له من المعطيات الموضوعيّة ما جعله ممكن الترجمة في بعض سياسات الدولة.
