اعتاد الدارسون العرب النظر إلى الإسلام من خلال المراكز الكبرى القديمة مثل القاهرة ودمشق وبغداد وقرطبة، ونادراً ما اهتموا بالأطراف المهمشة وكأن قدر هذه البلدان الآسيوية أن تبقى دائماً خارج دراسة واقع الثقافة الإسلامية التي يفتخر الباحثون بالانتماء إليها.
وقد ظلت المجتمعات الإسلامية الآسيوية غير مدروسة وغير مفهومة حتى اليوم. فالمفكرون العرب غالباً ما ربطوا الإسلام بالشرق الأوسط، وتناسى هؤلاء أن العدد الأكبر من السكان المسلمين موجود في آسيا: في الهند وباكستان وبنغلادش، وبالخصوص في أندونيسيا التي تعد أكبر بلد إسلامي من ناحية عدد السكان المسلمين، ورغم ذلك فإنه كثيراً ما يتم تجاهلها أو العزوف عن دراستها.
وترتب على هذا التقصير قلة إلمام القارئ باللغة العربية بوضع المسلمين في البلدان الآسيوية.. ولهذه الأسباب وغيرها ارتأينا معالجة هذا الموضوع علنا نساهم في لفت انتباه الباحثين والقراء إلى أهمية دراسة خصوصيات الإسلام الذي رحل من بيئته الأصلية ليحل في مجال جغرافي مغاير وليتفاعل مع ثقافات متعددة.
