Thomas Stearns Eliot was a poet, dramatist and literary critic. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948 "for his outstanding, pioneer contribution to present-day poetry." He wrote the poems The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, The Waste Land, The Hollow Men, Ash Wednesday, and Four Quartets; the plays Murder in the Cathedral and The Cocktail Party; and the essay Tradition and the Individ Thomas Stearns Eliot was a poet, dramatist and literary critic. (1987). بالإنكليزية: The Waste Land) Waste Land، the(عام 1922): قصيدة للشاعر الإنكليزي توماس ستيرنس إيليوت Eliot. تُعّد بإجماع النُقّاد أروعَ أعماله الشعرية على الإطلاق والقصيدة التي أكسّبّتهُ شهرته الدولية . و(( الأرض اليَباب)) تُعبر عن خيبة أمل جيل ما بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى وقرفِهِ أو تَقزٌزه، وتصور عالماً مثقّلاً بالمخاوف والذّعر والشهوات العقيمة. عالماً ينتظر إشارة ما تؤذن بالخلاص أو تعدُ به. وقد أهداها صاحبها إلى زميله الشاعر عزرا پاوند Poundd.وهي قصيدة حداثية واسعة التأثير في أربعمائة وأربعة وثلاثين سطراً [2] للشاعر البريطاني تي. إس. إليوت، نُشرت في 1922. أصبحت القصيدة واحدة من علامات الأدب الحديث رغم غموضها المزعوم وغرابتها، ففيها يتغير السارد بشكلٍ مفاجئ، كما أنها تراوح بين النبوءة والسخرية، وتقتبس ثقافاتٍ متعددة وإشاراتٍ أدبية متعددة وملتبسة. من عباراتها الشهيرة: “ابريل يا أقسى الشهور” (السطر الأول)، “سأريك الخوف في قبضة غبار”، وسطرها الأخير بالسنسكريتية: “شانته شانته شانته”.
