يتخذ جويتيسولو من شعيرة الأربعينية، أو ما يطلق عليه فى مصر حداد الأربعين يوماً التى تعقب رحيل المتوفى، رحلة روحية صوفية، ينطلق منها ليرصدها فى قالب يغلب عليه هوس المعرفة وتقصى أسرار العالم الآخر في حياة ما بعد الموت والبعث، ليبدأ سفره صاعدًا إلى السموات السبع في رحلة تشبه الإسراء والمعراج، يستلهم فيها ومضات وإشارات من أمهات الكتب التراثية الإسلامية مثل رسالة الغفران لأبي العلاء المعري، و المراتب السبعة لإمام العارفين والشيخ الأكبر محي الدين بن عربي، مرورًا بشيوخ الصوفية وشعرائه، فتطالعنا باقة من أسماء مثل جلال الدين الرومي، والسهروردي، وغيرهما من رموز التراث العربي الإسلامي إلى جوار المبدعين والمفكرين الغربيين والأسبتن، مثل دانتي، وميجيل دي ثربانتس، وكيبيدو وسورخوانا اينيس دي لا كروث وغيرهم. وإن كانت بوصلة الحكي تتجه دومًا خلال الذهاب الأربعيني إلى مدينة القاهرة، حيث المساجد والمقابر والأضرحة، واستشراف الأجواء السحرية الغامضة التي تعقب الأربعينية.
