صنف العلماء في عمل اليوم والليلة والدعوات والأذكار كتباً كثيرة معلومة عند العارفين، ولكنها مطوّلة بالأسانيد والتكرير، وهذا ما دعا "الإمام النووي" إلى جمع مادة كتابه هذا الذي يختصر فيه مقاصدها ما ذكرته كتب العلماء من الدعوات والأذكار، مهتماً فيه بحذف الأسانيد وذلك إيثاراً للاختصار، ومضيفاً إليه صحيح الأحاديث وحسنها وضعيفها ومنكرها، وذلك لأن هذا ما يفتقر إلى معرفته جميع الناس إلا النادر من المحدثين، هذا إلى جانب جمل من النفائس في علم الحديث، ودقائق الفقه، ومهمات القواعد، ورياضات النفوس، والآدبا التي تتأكد معرفتها على السالكين.
وما يميز هذه الطبعة من الكتاب أنها قد جاءت محققة حيث اهتم المحقق بمقابلته على أصول خطية لنتحقق من ضبط نصه، ولاستدراك ما قد يقع عليه من تحريف النساخ، فجمع عدة نسخ خطية في دار الكتب الظاهرية، اعتمد منها نسختين، أولاهما تحت رقم (433) حديث، وثانيتهما تحت رقم (7017عام). فقابل النسخ المطبوعة على هذين الأصلين، وصحح بعض الكلمات، واستدرك بعض النقص، وعلق على بعض المواطن الهامة، وخرج الأحاديث الضعيفة التي ساقها المؤلف وسكت عليها، وترجم بعض الأعلام، ثم زاد في هذه المرة تعليقات جديدة، وعدل بعض التعليقات القديمة، واستعان بكتاب "الفتوحات الربانية على الأذكار النووية" لابن علان الصديقي، ونقل عنه بعض أمالي الحافظ ابن الحجر العسقلاني التي تعقب فيها الإمام النووي، كما جعل فهرساً في آخر الكتاب جمع فيه بعض الفوائد التي يراها القارئ سريعاً فيرجع إلى أماكنها، وصنع فهرساً للكتب والأبواب والفصول، ورقم الآيات وجعلها ضمن أقواس مفردة، والأحاديث ضمن أقواس مزدوجة، ووضع بعض الألفاظ والعبارات الزائدة بين معقوفين عند مقابلة بعض الأحاديث على أصوالها، كصحيح مسلم وسنن أبي داود وغيرهما، وفصل الجمل حسب المعاني، ووضع أوائل البحث في أول كل سطر.
