ويعتبر حسام تمام واحدا من أبرز الخبراء العرب في شئون الإسلام السياسي والحركات السياسية ومن المتابعين لشئون الأقليات الإسلامية المقيمة في الغرب.
يعد تمام مؤسس أول مرصد متخصص لدراسة الحركات الإسلامية، وشغل منصب مدير تحرير قطاع الحركات الإسلامية بموقع "إسلام أون لاين"، وبدأ عمله الصحفى بجريدة آفاق عربية، ثم انتقل إلى "القاهرة"، ثم الأحرار.
وللفقيد عدة كتب وترجمات فى الحركات الإسلامية أبرزها "مع الحركات الإسلامية في العالم –رموز وتجارب وأفكار"،" تحولات الإخوان المسلمين تفكك الأيدولوجية ونهاية التنظيم".، وكان محاضراً فى جامعة زيورخ، وساهم فى العديد من الإصدارات المتخصصة فى الشرق الأوسط، بالتعاون مع مركز الثقافة الفرنسى وعدد من الجهات البحثية الأوروبية.
توفي في الخامس والعشرين من أكتوبر عام 2011م.

في هذا الكتاب يحاول حسام تمام؛ المحلل الاستثنائي المتفرد في شرح وفهم وتحليل التيار الإسلامي، فهم الأطر الحاكمة التي حددت مسار جماعة الإخوان المسلمين واختياراتها مع بداية ثورة 25 يناير، وتوفير بنية تحليلية يمكن من خلالها استشراف مواقف ورؤى الجماعة في المستقبل، ويسعى الباحث إلى الإجابة عن التساؤلات المتعلقة بموقف الإخوان من الإصلاح السياسي، وإزالة الغموض عن السؤال الذي يحير الكثيرين وهو: لماذا لم تنشق جماعة الإخوان، وكأنها عصية على الانشقاق؟ مستعرضًا أبرز الانشقاقات التي شهدتها الجماعة، وعلاقة التماسك التنظيمي بالبنية الداخلية لها.
كما يستعرض موقف الإخوان من الحركات ذات المطالب الاجتماعية في مصر قبل 25 يناير، متناولًا إشكالية التحديث المؤسسي والقيمي ومستعرضًا صعود التيار السلفي داخل الجماعة، ويناقش الباحث علاقة الإخوان بمسألة العنف المسلح، وموقفهم من الجهاد. كما يتطرق إلى إشكالية «الإخوان والدولة» ومدى إمكانية تكرار الإخوان لنموذج حزب «العدالة والتنمية» الحاكم في تركيا، مُسلطًا الضوء على الاختلافات بين التجربتين المصرية والتركية وعلاقة كل منهما بالدولة والنظام.
