تكمن أهمية هذا الكتاب في: التعرف على إضطرابات النمو الشامل من حيث أسبابها، وأعراضها، ومضاعفاتها، التعرف على نسب الإنتشار، والتشخيص، وطرق العلاج، الوقاية والتدخل المبكر، إرشادات للأهل، يعد محاولة لتوظيف نظرية العقل في مجال ذوي إضطرابات النمو الشامل، كذلك يعد مدخلاً لإجراء دراسات مستقبلية لدى فئات الأطفال ذوي إضطرابات النمو الشامل.
وقد يتناول هذا الكتاب ثلاثة أبواب اشتمل الباب الأول على نظرة جديدة في نظرية العقل وإضطرابات النمو الشامل وتم تقسيمه إلى فصلين أولهما: نظرية العقل، وثانيهما: مفهوم إضطرابات النمو الشامل وتطوره، واختتم هذا الباب بمخطط سهمي يبين بعض الإضطرابات النمائية الناتجة عن الإضطراب الجيني، والذي تم تناوله في البابين الثاني والثالث، واشتمل الباب الثاني على الإضطرابات الناتجة عن شذوذ في الكروموسومات العامة، وتم تناوله في تسعة عشر فصلاً، كما اشتمل الباب الثالث على الإضطرابات الناتجة عن شذوذ في كروموسومات الجنس، وتم تناوله في سبعة فصول.
وهذه الأبواب حاولت إبراز الحقيقة للتربويين والمهتمين، بشأن ذوي إضطرابات النمو الشامل.
