ويهطل المطر يا سامي وسيظل يهطل وسيظل المطر وستظل القطرات على النخيل وستبقى الأنهار تجري في العراق والعراة والجياع على شط النهر يتألمون ويبكون جائعين ويصرخون: هل من معطٍ؟ هل من مغيث؟ وفي العراق كل شيء وأي شيء والعراة والجياع بلا سكن وبلا حضن والمهجرون من أنباء العراق في كل مكان بلا سكن وبلا حضن وفي العراق ألف جرثومة تاكل وتمتص الدماء وترقص على ملابس كانت لعراة اليوم! حتى تلك القطرات التي كانت تستقر على النخيل والشجر ستُسْرق وسيأخذها أولئك نعم أولئك بإسم مكافحة الإرهاب، وسيُجتث النخيل بإسم إزالة الإرهاب والنخيل نخيل والإرهاب إرهاب!
في العراق يا سامي الخيرات والنفط، والعراة عراة والجياع جياع والحزن حزن. العراق بل حزن العرب كلهم بإسم العراق...أين العراق وسط إنشاء والديمقراطية؟ العراق أتعرف يا سامي أين هو العراق؟! أتريد أن تعلم أين يعيش العراق؟ العراق هناك شامخ، نعم هناك شامخ مجيد لأنه العراق...وسيظل العراق لأنه العراق...عندما أنهى شاهين كلامه كان الوقت قريباً من منتصف الليل، طلب مني أن أحضر له سجادة ليصلي، جلس شاهين يصلي ساعة كاملة، ذلك اليوم وتلك الليلة حفرا في داخل الروح وسيظلان كذلك إلى الموت.
رواية تستوقفك متأملاً في الأقدار التي يخوض الإنسان غمارها، أصدقاء ثلاثة ووفاء وإخلاص يسود صداقتهم، وأحداث تكتنفها آمال وألام وتمنيات بأوطان مثالية.
يحاول الكاتب تصوير حياة هؤلاء الثلاثة: سامي شاهين أحمد، كلٌّ له توجهاته إلا أن الجامع المشترك هو المعانة الإجتماعية السياسية، يتداخل الحدث الإجتماعي بالمعطيات السياسية التي شكلت الهم الأكبر على صعيد الشخصيات وعلى صعيد الكاتب.
