كتاب أركان القصة للكاتب .م. فورستر ولد فورستر في أول يناير1879 وجاء إلى الأسكندرية في الحرب العالمية الأولى وعمل بها وألف كتاباً يجمع تاريخ المدينة ومعالها. إن فكرة أن ننهي بحثًا بتخيلات عن مستقبل الرواية. هل ستكون أكثر واقعية او أقل؟ وهل ستقتلها السينيما؟ وهكذا الخيالات، سواء أكانت حزينة أم مرحة، يحيط بها جو عظيم دائما، فهي طريقة مناسبة لمد يد المساعدة أو إظهار الأهمية.لكن ليس لنا حق في هذه التخيلات.لقد رفضنا الماضي خشية أن يعوقنا، لذا يجب ألا تفيد بالمستقبل.لقد تصورنا الروائيين في المائتي سنه الماضية كلهم يكتبون في حجرة واحدة، معرضين لنفس العواطف وواضعين حوادث عصورهم في بوتقة الإلهام. ومهما كانت النتائج التي توصلنا إليها، فإن طريثتنا سليمة- سليمة بالنسبة إلى أجتماع من يدعي البحث أمثالنا. على أن هناك سؤالاً واحداً يمس موضوعنا ولا يستطيع إلا العالم النفسي أن يجيب عليه . فلنسأل هذا السؤال:هل ستتغير طريقة الإبتكار؟ هل ستأحذ المرآة طبقة أخرة من الزئبق؟ او بمعنى آخر، هل يمكن أن تتعير الطبيعة البشرية؟ لنفكر في هذا الاحتمال لحظة... ولنا الحق في هذا الإسترخاء.
