جِلبرت كيث تشسترتون: وُلِدَ جلبرت كيث تشسترتون في لندن عامَ ١٨٧٤، وكانَ من بينِ اهتماماتِه الكثيرةِ النقدُ الأدَبي، والصَّحافة، والدراما، والخَطابة، والفَلْسفة. تميَّزَ تشتسرتون بأعمالِه الروائيَّةِ الرائِعة، وأَشْهرُها سلسلةٌ مِنَ القصصِ البوليسيةِ القصيرةِ بطَلُها واحدةٌ من الشخصياتِ الخالدةِ في أدبِ القرنِ العشرين؛ وهي شخصيةُ «الأب براون»؛ الكاهنِ الرومانيِّ الكاثوليكيِّ القصيرِ المستديرِ الوجه، والمحقِّقِ الهاوي، الذي يعتمدُ في حلِّ الألغازِ وكشْفِ غموضِ الجرائمِ والقضايا على حَدْسِه وفَهْمِه العميقِ للطبيعةِ البشريَّة، وقُدْرتِه على رؤيةِ الشرِّ في النفوس، وملاحظةِ التفاصيلِ الدقيقة. كما أنه يُمارِسُ دوْرَه بصفتِه قَسًّا بمساعدةِ المجرِمِينَ على الاعترافِ والتَّوْبة. وقد ظهَرَ «الأب براون» في أكثر من ٥٠ قصةً قصيرةً نُشِرتْ في الفترةِ بينَ ١٩١٠ و١٩٣٦.

صُدِمَ «الأبُ براون» عندما علِمَ بنبأِ مَقتلِ السيرِ «آرون آرمسترونج»؛ فهذا الرجلُ كان قد اشتُهرَ بخِفةِ ظِلِّه وطِيبةِ قَلبِه، وكان معروفًا بشخصيتِه المَرِحةِ الوَدودةِ التي لا تَكفُّ عن المُزاح، وكانت احتماليةُ أن يكونَ له أعداءٌ ضعيفةً للغاية؛ فالجميعُ يَرغبونَ في أن يَحضرَ السيرُ «آرون» مَجالسَهم، كما يَروقُ لهم الاستماعُ إلى حديثِه الفَكِهِ والاستمتاعُ بما يَملكُه من رُوحِ الدُّعابة، وكانت خُطَبُه السياسيةُ والاجتماعيةُ عبارةً عن سَيلٍ من الحِكاياتِ والضحكاتِ الصاخِبة. استُدعيَ «الأبُ براون» إلى منزلِ القتيلِ الذي كان يقعُ بجانبِ خطِّ السككِ الحديدية، وأخذَ يستمِعُ باهتمامٍ إلى شَهاداتِ المحيطينَ بالقتيل، مُحاوِلًا إيجادَ تفسيرٍ لمَقتلِه. فهل سينجحُ «الأبُ براون» في فكِّ طَلاسمِ هذا اللغزِ المُثير؟ هذا ما سنعرفُه في هذه القِصةِالمُثيرة.
