يتناول هذا الكتاب فن السيرة الذاتية، فناً أدبياً مستقلاً عن فن السيرة الغيرية. وهو في هذا الإطار يتخذ نماذجه التطبيقية من الأدبيين العربي والعالمي في القديم والحديث: معرفاً بهذا الفن الأدبي وحدوده في إطار من الدراسة النظرية والتطبيقية فيتناول في فصوله الأربعة ماهية السيرة الذاتية ويفرق بينها وبين السيرة الغيرية، ثم يحدد المقصود بفن السيرة الذاتية على النحو الذي يجعل لها سماتها الخاصة وملامحها المميزة بين الفنون الأدبية.
ثم يدلف الكتاب تتميماً للفائدة إلى دراسة تطور السيرة الذاتية في الآداب العالمية والأدب العربيين قديماً وحديثاً، وكيف استقرت في شكلها الحديث امتداداً لتطورها عبر التاريخ الأدبي.
