والكتاب في فصوله السّبعة عشر يمكن أن يعدّ مرجعاً أساسيّاً في تاريخ أوربا الحديث، بدءاً من عصر النّهضة حتّى عتبات القرن الحادي والعشرين؛ ولا تكمن قيمته في بعده التّاريخي وحسب، قدر ما تكمن في الدّقّة المتناهية التي سلكها صاحبه في "تشريح الجسم الأوربي" قصد إظهار مكوّناته الثّقافية والإجتماعيّة.
وعلى أساس تلك المكوّنات يحاول الكاتب أن يعلّل إختلافات أجزاء القارّة مذهبيّاً وسياسيّاً، بدءاً من إختلاف الأنماط العائليّة إلى غاية الإختلافات الإيديولوجيّة في القرن العشرين.
ولعلّ الإلمام بتاريخ القارّة خلال القرون الخمسة الأخيرة لم يغيّب عن صاحبه النّظرة الإستشرافيّة التي كانت مبثوثة عبر فصول الكتاب، سواء من خلال تأكيد أنّ الجسم الأوربي ليس كياناً متجانس الأجزاء أم من خلال الإلماح إلى القضايا والتّحديّات التي ستواجه أوربا الموحّدة، وهي قضايا وتحدّيات منها ما يعود إلى طبيعة التجزّؤ الأوربي ومنها ما هو وافد عليها كقضيّتي السّامية والهجرة.
