يأتي هذا الكتاب ضمن سلسلة من ثلاثين جزء كتبها المؤلف أبو الحسن المسعودي، وهو المؤرخ الكبير صاحب الكتاب الشهير مروج الذهب، وفي هذا الجزء من السلسلة يتحدث عن أصل الخلق، ويعرض لنا الكثير من غرائب الأرض والبحار والأنهار وأصلها، ثم يعرج على الحديث عن الأنبياء بداية من آدم عليه السلام وصولًا إلى سيدنا موسى عليه السلام، ويقف بنا أمام ملوك مصر وفتوحاتهم وأحداث هذا البلد وحال الفراعنة والسحرة والكهان وآثار أعمالهم على الناس، ويعرض أمامنا الكثير من القصص الغريبة على مدار التاريخ. ومن أبرز الموضوعات الواردة في الكتاب: ذكر عمر الدنيا، ذكر الأرض وما فيها، ذكر البحر المحيط وما فيه من العجائب، خبر تنيس، ذكر آدم عليه السلام وولده، قابيل بن آدم عليه السلام، حام بن نوح عليه السلام، ذكر كنعان بن حام، ذكر يأجوج ومأجوج، ذكر الصقالبة، ذكر اليونانيين، ذكر الصين والإفرنج، ذكر الأندلس ومملكة الترك والروم والفرس وخراسان، ذكر سام بن نوح، ذكر إبراهيم عليه السلام، ذكر إسماعيل، حدث البلبلة، ذكر عاد، ذكر عناق بنت آدم عليه السلام، ذكر عجائب مصر وأخبار ملوكها وكهانه، ذكر مدينة الأشمون، أول من بنى الأهرام، ذكر ملوك مصر قبل الطوفان، ذكر بقراويس الملك، ذكر براوس الملك، ذكر مصرام بن بقراوس الملك، ذكر عيقام ولوحيم وحصليم وهوصال ونمرود، ذكر فرعان وأفراوس وأرمافيوس وغيرهم من الملوك.. وهكذا يمتد السرد التاريخي وصولًا إلى خروج موسى عليه السلام من مصر، وذكر غرق فرعون.
