جون هوايتنج: مُمثل وناقد وكاتب إنجليزي وُلد عام ١٩١٧م، وهو أحد المجددين في المسرح البريطاني، أثارت كتاباته حفيظة النقاد، ونال عدة جوائز. كتب هوايتنج عدة أعمال من أهمها: «شروط الاتفاق» وهي أول أعماله، وقد ظهرت بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية مباشرة، و«جولة في الصحراء»، وقد أخرجها له التلفزيون وأحدثت ضجة لدى النقاد، و«يوم القديسة»، و«ادفع بنسًا لتسمع أغنية»، وهي مسرحية كوميدية في نثر شعري، و«نشيد المشاة» عام ١٩٥٤م . توفي جون هوايتنج عام ١٩٦٣م عن خمسة وأربعين عامًا.

«… الإِنْسانُ مَخْلوقٌ عَجِيب، يَدعُو إلَى السُّخْريَة، ورُبَّما لَمْ يُخلَقْ إلَّا مِن أجْلِ ذَلِك. شامِخٌ برَأْسِه، مُنْتَشٍ بعَملِه، ممَّا يَدعُو إلَى الاسْتِخفافِ بِه. مُسْتغرِقٌ فِي اخْتِراعِ مَعْبوداتٍ زائِفةٍ يُبرِّرُ بِها وُجودَه، فيُصِمُّ أُذنَيْه عَنِ الضَّحِك، لا يَرَى بعَينَيْه إلَّا نفْسَه، فهُوَ أَعْمى عَن شَاراتِ السُّخْريَةِ الَّتِي يُلوَّحُ بِها فِي وَجْهِه؛ وهَكَذا يَسِيرُ مَخْمورًا، أَعْمى وأَصَم، خَيْرَ مَوْضوعٍ للتَّفكُّهِ العَمَلِي.»
مَسْرحيةٌ بَطلُها القَسُّ جراندير — راعِي كَنِيسةِ القِدِّيسِ بطرس — الَّذِي عاشَ فِي فرنسا خِلالَ حُكْمِ لويس الثالِثَ عَشَر، والَّذِي عاصَرَ فَترةَ الصِّراعِ بَينَ الكَنِيسةِ والدَّوْلةِ ومُحاوَلةِ كُلٍّ مِنْهُما السَّيْطرةَ عَلى الأُخْرى. بَدأَ جراندير يَبحَثُ عَنِ اللهِ للتَّقرُّبِ إلَيْه، بَعِيدًا عَنِ المُعتقَداتِ السائِدةِ فِي عَصْرِه، مُتَّخِذًا كُلَّ الطُّرقِ والوَسائِلِ مِنَ الحُبِّ والفِكْرِ وحتَّى الجِنْس مِنْ أجْلِ الوُصُولِ إلَى غَايتِه، وعِنْدما تَكتشِفُ الكَنِيسةُ خُروجَه عَنْ أَفْكارِها تَعْتبِرُه مُتلَبسًا بالشَّياطِين، وتُقدِّمُه للمُحاكَمةِ بمُشارَكةِ السُّلْطاتِ مِنْ أجْلِ أنْ يَعترِفَ بخُرُوجِه عَنِ الإِيمانِ القَوِيم، لكِنَّه يُصِرُّ عَلى أَفْكارِه، فيُنفَّذُ فِيهِ حُكْمُ الإِحْراق. ألَّفَ هوايتنج «الشَّياطِين» عامَ ١٩٦١م، واستمَدَّ مَوضُوعَها مِن كِتابِ «شياطين لودان» للكاتِبِ الإِنْجلِيزِي ألدوس هكسلي.
