بحْثًا عن الراحةِ والسَّكينةِ لينسى إحدى التجارِبِ المُؤلمة، يسافرُ «فرتر» الشابُّ الحالمُ إلى إحدى القُرى البعيدةِ بريفِ ألمانيا السَّاحر؛ بلدةٍ صغيرةٍ لم تُلوثْها الحضارةُ والتمدُّنُ بعدُ، تُعجِبُه حياةُ الريفِ البِكر، ويحبُّ أهلَ البلدةِ ويحبُّونه، وسرعانَ ما يصبحُ جزءًا من مجتمعِهم الصغير، وهناك يتعرَّفُ على «شارولت» الجميلةِ المثابرةِ التي تولَّتْ رعايةَ إخوتِها الصِّغارِ بعدَ وفاةِ والدتِها، وخلالَ وقتٍ قصيرٍ يقعُ في حبِّها بعدَ أن يَنبهرَ بجميلِ صفاتِها وشخصيتِها المِثاليَّة، لكنْ للأسفِ يستحيلُ أن يُتوَّجَ هذا الحبُّ بالزَّواج؛ ﻓ «شارولت» مخطوبةٌ لشابٍّ آخَرَ يحبُّها وتحبُّه، ويستعدَّان للزفاف، ماذا سيفعلُ «فرتر» للظَّفرِ بحُبِّه؟ هذا ما سنعرفُه بقراءةِ هذه الروايةِ المُميَّزةِ والمختلفةِ للشاعرِ الألمانيِّ الشهيرِ «جوته».
