ريك آرثر بلير الاسم الحقيقي لجورج أورويل، وهو الاسم المستعار له والذي اشتهر به هو صحافي وروائي بريطاني.
عمله كان يشتهر بالوضوح والذكاء وخفة الدم والتحذير من غياب العدالة الاجتماعية ومعارضة الحكم الشمولي وإيمانه بالاشتراكية الديمقراطية.
يعتبر القرن العشرين أفضل القرون التي أرّخت الثقافة الإنجليزية، كتب أورويل في النقد الأدبي والشعر الخيالي والصحافة الجدلية.
أكثر شيء عرف به هو عمله الديستوبي رواية 1984 التي كتبها في عام 1949 وروايته المجازية مزرعة الحيوان عام 1945 والتين تم بيع نسخهم معا أكثر من أي كتاب آخر لأي من كتاب القرن الواحد والعشرون.كتابه تحية لكتالونيا في عام (1938) كان ضمن رصيد خبراته في الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية، والمشهود به على نطاق واسع على أنه مقاله الضخم في السياسية والأدب واللغة والثقافة.
في عام 2008 وضعته صحيفة التايمز في المرتبة الثانية في قائمة "أعظم 50 كاتب بريطاني منذ عام 1945" استمرت تأثير أعمال أوريل على الثقافة السياسية السائدة ومصطلح أورويلية الذي يصف ممارسات الحكم الاستبدادي والشمولي والتي دخلت في الثقافة الشعبية مثل ألفاظ عديدة أخرى من ابتكاره مثل الأخ الأكبر، التفكير المزدوج، الحرب الباردة وجريمة الفكر وشرطة الفكر
نتعرف في هذه الرواية على أورويل الناقد الاجتماعي الذي سخر بمرارة بالغة من المجتمع الطبقي الانكليزي وتقاليده ومن الكنيسة وتعاليمها وطوائفها التناحرة.
دورثي (بطلة الرواية)، لا تتحمل الواقع الصعب الذي تعيشه في بيت بائس وخرب للكنيسة لا يشاركها فيه سوى أب أرمل وبخيل ألقى عليها بأعباء أعمال البيت والكنيسة ولم يكن لها عون سوى خادمة بلهاء...
تستهلك تلك الأعمال الرتيبة والمملة جل وقتها فتصاب بفقدان الذاكرة وتهرب من البيت لتجد نفسها في لندن. ترحل مع مجموعة من المتشردين للعمل في مزرعة في الريف وتعود إلى لندن ثانية بعد أن يتخلى عنها والدها لتواجه التشرد وبرد الشوارع والتسول... وحين تعود إلى بيت والدها، ترفض عرض الزواج الذي تقدم به الرجل الوحيد الذي تحبه وترتاح برفقته لأنها تحمل عقدة نفسية جراء العلاقة غير الناجحة بين والدها وأمها والتربية الدينية المتزمتة وشعورها المريض بالواجب.
