ولد داريو في إيطاليا عام 1926، وتوفي فيها عام 2016، هو ممثل وكوميدي وكاتب مسرحي ومخرج ومؤلف أغاني ومنسق حملات سياسية.
أُنتجت مسرحيته الأولى ذات المشهد الواحد في عام 1958 ومنذ ذلك التاريخ قام بكتابة وإخراج وتمثيل في ما يزيد على أربعين عملاً مسرحياً، حاز عام 1997 على جائزة نوبل للآداب وجاء في كلمة الجنة: "هو من بين الجميع يمجِّد لقب (المهرج) بالمعنى الحقيقي لهذه الكلمة، فبمزيج من الضحك والجاذبية يفتح أعيننا على الظلم والإستغلال في المجتمع بمنظور تاريخي واسع يمكننا من إدراكهما عبره...".
