وُجدت منال جثّة هامدة بعد اغتصابها. حفاظاً على سمعة العائلة، اتّفق كبارها على الادعاء أن الوفاة جاءت نتيجة ارتطام رأسها بأحد الأحجار. أبوها يعرف أنها قُتلت. لكنه يعضّ على الجرح، ويلوذ بالصمت. يعتزل الناس، ويصبح أسير غرفته، ينحت تماثيل تجسّد ابنته الراحلة. شقيقتها التوأم، ليال، ساورتها الشكوك، فقرّرت كشف ملابسات الجريمة، ومعرفة الحقيقة. وكانت المفاجأة صاعقةً عندما فتح البستانيّ العجوز قلبه، وحكى ما رآه ليلة مصرع الفتاة البريئة.
