كنا نتعاشق مع سجائرنا في تلك الأيام والسنين، كنا ندخِّن بشراهة منقطعة النظير، كأنَّنا سنلتقي الله قريباً وكأنَّ الفرج والفجر قادمان لا محالة، كنا ندخِّن ونشرب حتى إذا وقعنا في المرض، عشقنا اللِّفَافة، كانت صديقتنا الوحيدة، كنا نتعمَّد نسيان علبة الكبريت كي نشعل السيجارة من مؤخرة الأخرى. كانت السيجارة بالنسبة لنا كسمكة الكهل سانتياغو في رواية الشيخ والبحر، كنا نغازلها في سهراتنا كما يغازل العجوز سمكته التي تبتعد عنه، كنا نخاف أن نسحبها بعمق كي لا تنتهي، كما يخاف العجوز أن يسحب سمكته فينقطع الحبل وتهرب منه. كنا في تلك الأيام على استعداد لتدخين أوراق الشجر أو العشب الملفوف بورق الدفاتر، وكنا ندخِّن غالباً روْث الحيوانات دون أن ندري.
