كان مراد بك على فراش الموت، بينما يجثو يوسف على ركبتيه باكيا بحرقة وتخرج منه آهات متتالية لا يستطيع كبحها، يمسك بيد سيدة يتحسسها تارة ويقبلها أخرى، كأنه يريد أن يشبع عينيه برؤية الرجل الذي عاش عمره كله تحت قدميه، ويُشبع جلده بلمسه لأطول فترة ممكنة.فتح الرجل السبعيني عينيه بصعوبة وحرّك شفتيه بمعاناة، فانتفض يوسف وكأنه بُعث من جديد، فها هو مراد يعود مرة أخرى إلى الدنيا، ربما كان في غيبوبة مؤقتة وأفاق منها، وقد يقوم بعد عدة ساعات ليتحرك فى أرجاء قصره الكبير مرة أخرى، مستندا على عصاه التي كثيرا ما أشبعه بها ضربا، لكن الخادم الأمين مستعد لنسيان كل الإساءات السابقة وتقبل المزيد، بشرط أن يعود سيده إلى الحياة.
