Islam is the way of life for more than six hundred million people. Its influence in international affairs and, consequently, on the daily lives of people throughout the world is steadily increasing.
Professor Montgomery Watt's study provides the understanding of the social and theological systems of thought that motivate Islamic civilisation. The fundamental differences between Islamic and occidental concepts of religion make is difficult to explain Islam to the Westerner, but by adopting the methodological standpoint of sociology the author is able to overcome these differences and to give a balanced account of Islam which will be easily understood by Western readers.
Religion is seen here as a basic plan integrating every aspect and activity of human life which is expressed in a system of ideas or 'vision' of the world that permeates the whole fabric of society and lives of individual believers. It not only embraces theological dogma, forms of worship and political theory, but also lays down a detailed code of conduct including even matters which the Westerner would classify as hygiene or etiquette. This 'vision' is embodied in the teachings of the Quran, which are here examined from historical and theological viewpoints.
While much of this book is devoted to describing the history of Islam and to considering its future as a way of life capable of making important contributions to developments in international affairs, an Epilogue describes the trends that Islam has been taking in the twelve years since the book was first written.
