على الرغم من أنّ التساؤل عن ماهيّة الإسلام يضرب بجذوره قديماً، يبقى تساؤلاً متجدداً باستمرار، يظهر من حين إلى آخر في العديد من الحقول المعرفية؛ وخاصة في الدراسات الأنثروبولوجية المعنيّة بالإسلام. وربّما يكون السبب في ذلك وجود العديد من الاختلافات في بعض الممارسات والاعتقادات الموجودة في بلدانٍ عن تلك الموجودة في بلدان أخرى، فكان السؤال: هل يمكننا أن نطلق على هذه الممارسات كلّها «إسلامية»؟ في هذا السياق تأتي هذه الدراسة لمناقشة تعددية الممارسات الإسلامية في التاريخ، وهي تركّز، على وجه التحديد، على تلك التي سادت في مجتمعات من البلقان إلى البنغال.
ينقسم العمل إلى ثلاثة أقسام رئيسة: القسم الأول: التساؤلات، الذي فصّل فيه ستّة أسئلة تنبع من التساؤل الأساسي: ما الإسلام؟ القسم الثاني: التصوّرات، الذي احتوى على ثلاثة فصول ناقشت العديد من التصوّرات السائدة عن الإسلام والقانون، والدين والحضارة، والدين والثقافة، والديني والعلماني، والمقدس والمدنّس. أمّا القسم الثالث، فجاء تحت عنوان "إعادة بناء التصورات" واحتوى على فصلين ناقش فيهما إعادة بناء التصوّرات الخاصّة بالنص وما قبل النص، والسياق، والخاص والعام، والشكل والمعنى.
وقد استقبلت الأوساط العلمية الغربية هذا الكتاب بحفاوةٍ بالغة. كتبت عنه دار نشر جامعة برينستون أنّه العمل الذي أجاب عن سؤال: كيف نفهم الإسلام؟ أَيوجد إسلام واحد أم إسلامات متعددة؟ ما "الإسلامي" في الفلسفة الإسلامية، أو الفن الإسلامي؟ هل يجب أن نفرق بين "الإسلامي" الدال على دين و"الإسلامي" الدال على ثقافة؟ أم هل يجب أن نتخلّى عن استخدام مصطلح "الإسلام" بوصفه مصطلحاً تحليلياً؟.
