فرانتس كافكا (3 يوليو 18883 – 3 يونيع 1924) الكاتب التشيكي العظيم، أحد علامات الأدب الكبرى، ليس في الأدب الألماني فحسب، وإنما في الأدب العالمي. ولد في عاصمة التشيك براغ حين كانت ضمن الإمبراطورية النمساوية المجرية، وصف بأنه رائد الكتابة الفلسفية الكابوسية، وعرفت لغة كتابته الأدبية، الألمانية، بأنها بارعة وفائقة الدقة والجمال. قضى مرض سل الرئة على جسده، لكن أدبه ضمن له الخلود. رواية أمريكا، هي رواية كافكا الأولى، وتعرف أيضًا بعنوان "الرجل الذي اختفى"، كتبها كافكا من عام 1911 وحتى عام 1914، وظهرت الطبعة الأولى منها عام 1927، بعد وفاة كافكا. في الحوارات المختلفة كان دائمًا ما يشير كافكا إلى هذا الكتاب بوصفه "روايته الأمريكية"، وظهر الفصل الأول من الرواية منفصلًا في حياة كافكا عام 1913 بعنوان "الوقاد. والرواية تتضمن الكثير من التفاصيل عن تجارب أقارب كافكا في أمريكا.
