قرر سقراط منذ القديم أن الإنسان أحوج إلى معرفته نفسه منه إلى معرفته ما حوله من مظاهر الوجود. وفي الحق إنه لم يزل قسط الناس بعد ضئيلاً في العلم بأسرار نفوس الأفراد والجماعات رغم تعاقب الدهور. فإذا لم توفق جهود المشتغلين بعلم الاجتماع لحل الكثيرمن المشكلات، فإن في حل القليل فوزاً في تخفيف العلل الاجتماعية التي يتوجع البشر منها، ويتألم مما يترتب على وجودها من المصائب. فكل محاولة في خدمة علم الاجتماع إذن هي محاولة مشكورة، لما يلقاه كل مشتغل بعلم الاجتماع من وعورة الطريق عندما يريد تذليل المصطلحات، وإنزال المعاني الاجتماعية في عبارة عربية مستقيمة، تتهيأ من ألفة الألفاظ وجريانها على الألسن. والكتابة في علم الاجتماع على نمط حديث لم تزل حديثة. ووصل ما يكتب بأسلوب هذا العصر بأساليب ما كتبه السلف الصالح لم يزل في الدور الأول من التنسيق. وفي هذا الكتاب جهود موفقة في تيسير موضوع معقد بطبيعته، وفي توضيح ما لا يخلو من ظلام.
