Dans son village pres de Afka, le jeune Badr, dote d'une beaute hors du commun et soumis a l'incomprehensions de son entourage, est habite par une vision obsedante. Son arrivee au couvent ou il s'occupe du jardin va provoquer une serie d'evenements tumultueux, entrainant confusion et danger avec des consequences tragiques.
Amours, meurtre et reincarnation se melent etroitement au coeur de ce roman qui depeint la societe d'alors et des personnages dechires entre le passe et le present, les traditions et les voies du changement.
