"The author describes the country as a strange mixture of North and South, East and West, Europe and Africa. Mosques have the pointed roofs of Europe in place of the gleaming domes of the East; minarets are square and thick instead of found and tapering; the multitude of storks' nests on pinnacle and tower seem more appropriate to Germany than to Africa. Morocco may well be called "the land of paradox." Mr. Home weaves into the account of his own travels and adventures much interesting information on the history and customs of the people. He devotes one chapter to Xauen, a mountain stronghold on the edge of the Riff. Many of its inhabitants are descendants of the Moors who once overran the southern provinces of Spain, and the town still gives a faithful picture of what Moorish Granada must have been in the fifteenth century."--The British Medical Journal Jan. 9, 1937 p. 76
