Muchos académicos no dudan en señalar que el tema de los derechos humanos se ha convertido en el tema más dominante hoy en el mundo. Por ejemplo, Ann Kent sostiene en Between Freedom and Subsistence: China and Human Rights: “El problema de los derechos humanos se halla en el corazón del discurso político.” Algunos sostienen que incluso aquellos países a los que no les entusiasma demasiado el concepto de los derechos humanos, se esfuerzan por demostrar que sus acciones no violan los derechos humanos.
