Muchos académicos no dudan en señalar que el tema de los derechos humanos se ha convertido en el tema más dominante hoy en el mundo. Por ejemplo, Ann Kent sostiene en Between Freedom and Subsistence: China and Human Rights: “El problema de los derechos humanos se halla en el corazón del discurso político.” Algunos sostienen que incluso aquellos países a los que no les entusiasma demasiado el concepto de los derechos humanos, se esfuerzan por demostrar que sus acciones no violan los derechos humanos. De hecho, ¿quién podría estar en contra de un concepto llamado “derechos humanos”?
Con respecto al Islam en particular, Khalid Abou El Fadhl escribió: “De todos los desafíos morales que enfrenta el Islam en la era moderna, el tema de los derechos humanos es el más formidable.” Sin duda alguna, los países, organizaciones, académicos e individuos musulmanes, sienten la necesidad de explicar exactamente cuál es su postura frente a los derechos humanos. De hecho, muchas veces en los debates políticos internos en el Islam sobre derechos, es el paradigma de los derechos humanos el que resuena con más frecuencia en el público, sin importar qué público sea.
