Sa relation clandestine avec Ghâda, une femme qu’il n’a pu épouser pour cause d’incompatibilité sociale entre familles, ne lui procure plus grand-chose, et il s’agirait pour lui de mettre fin à cette histoire impossible. Seul, en crise, il voudrait prendre un nouveau départ dans la vie. Mais comment ? Ateliers de développement personnel, thérapie par la pêche, consommation effrénée d’alcool, sans parler des lettres qu’il adresse à son coiffeur de Riyad ou à un célèbre animateur de talk-shows, Ghâleb va tout tenter… dans le plus grand désordre. Roman familial, conte cruel et facétieux sur la crise de la quarantaine, récit sur l’immigration, Le Castor déplie avec jubilation les complexités de la société saoudienne et nous montre que, finalement, la zoologie est l’un des plus courts chemins pour comprendre l’homme.Mohammed Hasan Alwan est né à Riyad en 1979. Outre un recueil de nouvelles et un essai sur l’émigration, il a publié quatre romans. Le Castor, qui est le dernier en date – et le premier à être traduit en français –, lui a valu de figurer en 2013 parmi les six finalistes du Prix international de la fiction arabe.
