قلما نجد كتابا يعالج الأرض من السهولة واليسر مثل كتاب "حقائق عن الأرض" الذي قام بتأليفه العالم البريطاني باتريك مور، حيث يتطرق إلى موضوعات خطيرة متشعبة عن كوكبنا هذا، وينفذ من قشورها إلى لبها ثم يربط بينها بمهارة فائقة منقطعة النظير.. وقد بدأ المؤلف من ذلك الوقت السحيق الذي كانت الأرض فيه كرة ملتهبة من نار لا نعرف عن نشأتها سوى القليل، ثم انتقل بعد ذلك إلى العصور الجيولوجية الغابرة التي نستطيع أن ندرس صخورها، ولكنها لا تحوي آثاراً للحياة، حتى وصل إلى العصور الأكثر حداثة التي يمكننا أن نفحص صخورها وما تحويه من بقايا نباتات أو حيوانات كانت تعيش وترتع حينذاك. وهكذا نتطرق رويداً من البعيد الغامض الذي يحاول العلم تفسيره بنظريات شتى إلى القريب الواضح الذي توصل العلم فيه إلى الكثير من الحقائق الدامغة .
