يضم الكتاب عدداً كبيراً من المقالات والقصص الوعظية والرمزية، وبعض القصائد النثرية، وكان جبران قد كتبها لجريدة "المهاجر" ما بين 1903 و1908، ثم جمعت ونشرت في كتاب واحد سنة 1914.
يدور معظم محتويات الكتاب حول موضوعات أربعة: المجتمع، الطبيعة، الحب والوجود؛ تناول جبران المجتمع والمدنية الحديثة في عدد كبير من قصص الكتاب ومقالاته، منها "في مدينة الأموات" "موت الشاعر وحياته" "بنات البحر" "رؤيا" (ص 61- 62 و 71- 74) "الأمس واليوم" "بين الحقيقة والخيال" "بين الكوخ والقصر" "طفلان" "المجرم" "مدينة الماضي" "على ملعب الدهر" و"الحيوان الأبكم".
أكد جبران في غير واحد من هذه الفصول أن "المال مصدر شرور الإنسان" وأنه سبب جهله أيضاً؛ وفي معظم القصص والمقالات والقصائد النثرية يقرن جبران حياة الشاعر وحياة الفقير الطاهر بالقرية، بالطبيعة؛ ففي "حياة الحب" يقترن حب الشاعر بفصول الطبيعة، وفقراؤه إما رعاة في "حكاية" و "الأمس واليوم" أو من القرويين البسطاء في "بين الكوخ والقصر" و"نظرة إلى الآتي".
وموقف جبران من الطبيعة هو موقف الرومنسي الذي أحبها، بل قدسها، ولم يجد فيها إلا الخير والطهر والكمال، وإلى جانب الطبيعة خص جبران الحب بالعديد من قصص هذا الكتاب ومقالاته، مثل "حكاية" و"إبتسامة ودمعة" و"مناجاة" و"الرفيقة" و"مخبآت الصدور" و"حديث الحب" و"الطفل يسوع والحب الطفل".
يبين جبران "بين الخرائب" أن الحب مقدس وخالد، فالأمجاد السياسية والمادية تزول، وروائع الفكر يتخطاها الزمن، ولا يبقى إلا الحب وحده...
