Antoun Saadeh was the most modern and forward thinking political leader in the Near East in the Twentieth Century. He was born on the cusp of the modern era in Syria and his short life spanned the two great wars of the modern age. He experienced the horrors of the First World War, which exploded the sedate ''long peace'' of the Near East forever. Few generations have lived through such a wrenching transformation of life as his did. He led an intense and eventful life throughout which he manifested an unrelenting ability for innovations. He addressed issues of social reform, political reconstruction, literary innovation, historical analysis, philosophical discource, and militant organization with a uniform concern of modernization. His interests were varied, his education solid, his intellect vibrant, and his commitment to the cause of his people unwavering. He was a man of wide horizons, but he also had the patience to care for the important small details. He started a movement of national renaissance and left a major literary legacy, but as yet no factual biography has succeeded in capturing the diverse aspects of his life.
The life of Antoun Saadeh has been closely entwined with the modern history of the Near East, and the understanding of his life and work has necessarily been subject to the turmoil of that history. His heroic martyrdom in 1949 has colored the understanding of his life and career. His followers have approached the details of his life with devotional fervor that paints the life of the martyred leader in super-heroic tones. His detractors have been equally affected by his tragic fate and have shied away from even attempting a proper understanding or evaluation of the man preferring to revert to worn out partisan characterizations. Our aim in the present work is to find the man behind the martyr, and the thinker behind the hero. This first volume, which appears on the first centennial of the birth of Antoun Saadeh, covers his youth years in Mount Lebanon and the Americas. Future volumes will address subsequent periods in his life.
