Book Description

While in jail from early February to early May 1936, Antoun Sa'ade [1904-1949], founder of the Syrian Nationalist Party [SNP], later the Syrian Social Nationalist Party [ssnp], completed a book he had started writing three months before the French authorities in Lebanon discovered this secret political party and arrested its leader and his assistants. In this book, The Genesis of Nations, Sa'ade formulated his belief in the existence of a Syrian nation in a homeland defined as embracing all historic Syria extended to the Suez Canal in the south, and that includes modern Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait. The boundaries of the historic environment in which the Syrian nation evolved went much beyond the scope usually ascribed to Syria, extending from the Taurus range in the north-east and the Zagros mountains in the north-west to the Suez Canal and the Red Sea in the south and includes the Sinai peninsula and the Gulf of Aqaba, and from the Syrian sea(Mediterranean)in the west, including the island of Cyprus, to the arch of the Arabian desert and the Persian Gulf in the east. This region is also called the Syrian Fertile Crescent, the island of Cyprus being its star.

In The Genesis of Nations, Sa'ade elaborates on defining what a nation is, how it evolves within the context of human development and its relation to sociology proper. The author refers to the fact that since Ibn Khalun's famous Introduction to History[Prolegomena], no other sociological book in Arabic had appeared. Sa'ade also mentioned that hard political conditions made it difficult for him to revise this book.
