الكتاب يشتمل على مزيج من القصص وبعض القواعد في السياسة وفي الصحة والتغذية، وقيل أن أرسطو أرسل الكتاب إلى الإسكندر المقدوني. نقله إلى العربي يحيى بن البطريق. ومن ثم نقل الكتاب إلى اللاتينية في القرن الثالث عشر الميلادي وأكتسبت شهرة واسعة في أوروبة.
