إذن ما هي الصفة التي تميز "موناليزا" كعمل فني عن صورة فوتوغرافية وبعبارة أخرى ما هي الصفة التي تميز العمل الفني عن الأعمال العادية والأشياء الطبيعية؟ هذا هو السؤال الأساسي الذي يعالجه بل Bell في هذا الكتاب حيث يحاول في الفصل الأول من الكتاب بيان ماهية الفن وذلك على ضوء كل من الفرضية الاستيطيقية وما بعد الانطباعية، والفرضية الميتافيزيقية والأخلاق، ويستعرض في الفصل الرابع الحركة الفنية التي ابتدأت مع سيزان مبيناً ريادته لتلك الحركة والسمتان البارزتان لمنحاه الفني والمتمثل بالتبسيط والتعميم والتشخيص، وفي الفصل الرابع يحاول المؤلف استشفاف مستقبل الفن من خلال محورين المجتمع والفن ثم الفن والمجتمع. وقد أخذت معالجة "بل" لسؤاله المطروح سمة فلسفية حيث شكل هذا الكتاب أهم ما كتب في فلسفة الفن.
