الصعاليك هم الجانب الآخر للعصر الجاهلي، هم الجانب المتمرد على أوضاع وتقاليد قاسية، هم الخلفاء والأغربة الذين شذوا عن قانون القبيلة، وحملوا السيف لإعادة التوازن الاجتماعي كحياة اختلت من الموازين والمقاييس، في بيئة كان فيها الفقر المدقع يقتل البعض من الجوع، ويوقع بالأغنياء من التخمة، والصعاليك هم الفترة الغامضة في تلك الحقبة من الزمن، حاول الباحث في كتابه هذا الوقوف على مسافة قريبة منهم وذلك من خلال جولة فكرية في رحاب تاريخ الأدب الجاهلي متناولاً جانباً منه والذي مثل مدار البحث في هذا الكتاب، وهو شعر الصعاليك وشعراؤهم.
وقد عمل الباحث على إغناء بحثه بتقديم لمحة عن العصر الجاهلي تحدث فيها عن أيام الجاهلية والحياة الاجتماعية وأسواق العرب ومعارفهم وعن اللغة العربية في تلك الفترة، انتقل بعدها للحديث عن الصعاليك ملقياً الضوء على أهم شعرائهم ونماذج من أشعارهم، والشعراء هم: عودة من الورد، تأبط شراً، الشنفري، السليك بن السلكة.
