يقدم مؤلفا الكتاب خبرة 70 عاماً من دراسة التغيير، وتحليل اتجاهات الناس المختلفة في التعامل معه، سواء الشركات والأفراد. وهو يخاطب القارئ مباشرة، ويحذره من مجموعات مختلفة من المصائد التي قد تجعله غير قادر على رؤية التغير، وتمنعه من التفكير في المستقبل بوضوح، فيزوده بمجموعة مضادة من تقنيات التفكير المفيدة للتغلب على هذه المصائد، والانطلاق نحو المستقبل بذهن منفتح. ويتسم أسلوب المؤلفَيْن بالتشويق والبساطة واستخدام مختلف طرق الإقناع، بتطبيق قوانين الرياضيات والعلوم الطبيعية وحتى قواعد كرة القدم على ظواهر العلاقات الاجتماعية ومنها الإدارة، والاستشهاد برصيد ضخم من التجارب والأمثلة من واقع الحياة لإبراز دلالتها بالنسبة إلى الأفكار المطروحة.
وينقسم الكتاب إلى أربعة أقسام؛ فيعنى الأول منها بالكشف عن المصائد الفردية المتمثلة في التحيز الفردي الذي يمنع رؤية التغيير، ووسائل التغلب عليها، والثاني يبين المصائد المؤسسية التي تعطل الاستجابة للتغيير، وسبل مواجهتها، أما القسم الثالث فيتحدث عن تجاوز فخ التفكير الجزئي ويطرح وسائل مُعِينة لرؤية الصورة الشاملة، وأخيراً يعنى القسم الرابع بعملية تخيُّل الطريق، من خلال استخدام بعض الاستعارات التي تلخص صورة الواقع في الذهن وتبسط إدراك تفاعلاته المعقدة.
ويتلخص الهدف النهائي للكتاب في مساعدة القارئ على رؤية الجوانب الإيجابية في التغير والمساهمة في صنعها، بدلاً من أن يفاجأ بها، وألا يشعر أنه ضحية للتغيير، فكل تغير يحمل في طياته مجموعة من الفرص لمن يقدر على رؤيتها، ومعرفة كيفية الاستفادة منها.
