قصيدة جون ميلتون الملحمية الشهيرة تستكشف الأصول الكونية والأخلاقية والروحية لوجود الإنسان. وقد نشر دار البطريق" الفردوس المفقود" وهى قصيدة ملحمية ذات نطاق ملحمي، تستحضر كونًا شاسعًا ومذهلًا يمتد عبر مساحات شاسعة من المكان والزمان، مأهول بالبشر. في معرض لا ينسى من البشاعة. من خلال وضع الشيطان ذو الشخصية الكاريزمية وآدم وحواء العاريين البريئين في قلب هذه القصة، و خلق أيضًا مأساة إنسانية مكثفة حول سقوط الإنسان، وقد كتبها ميلتون عندما كان في الخمسينيات من عمره بخيبة أمل مريرة - و أدى التناقض الواضح للفردوس المفقود تجاه السلطة إلى جدل حاد حول ما إذا كان سينجح في "تبرير طريق الله للناس"، أو فضح قسوة المسيحية.
