يروي هذا العمل قصة الدكتور جيمس دوتي الذي نشأ صبياً فقيراً بائساً في أسرة كان الأب فيها مدمناً والأم مصابة بالاكتئاب. وحين كان لا يزال فتى صغيراً، قصد يوماً متجراً يبيع المستلزمات الضرورية لممارسة ألعاب الخفة التي كان مولعاً بها، فقابل روث التي علّمته نوعاً من ألعاب الخفة يتعلّق بآلية عمل الدماغ والقلب. ولكن، بما أنه كان في الثانية عشرة من عمره فقط، لم يستطع فهم كل ما شرحته له. لذا طبّق ما استطاع فهمه فحسب. ومع مرور الوقت، حقق جيمس أحلامه، وصار طبيباً جراحاً ثرياً فاغترَ بنفسه، واحتاج إلى سنوات طويلة لكي يدرك خطأه ذاك. وبعد أن تعرّض لحادث مريع نجا منه بأعجوبة، صار متواضعاً، وتمكن من فهم ما علمته إياه روث قبل سنين، فأنشأ معهداً للبحوث حول التراحم والإيثار، وأدرك أن القلب والدماغ حين يعملان معاً يصنعان المعجزات.
