لقد احتل الشعر الاجتماعي في العصر الحديث مكانة بارزة لم تكن له من قبل وذلك للظروف القاسية التي مرَّ بها الوطن العربي نتيجة للاحتلال الأجنبي لمعظم أجزائه حتى الستينات من القرن العشرين ، وبذلك تدهورت الأحوال السياسية ، والاقتصادية، والاجتماعية ، فاستجاب الأدب والأدباء بوجه عام والشعر والشعراء بوجه خاص لدعوة الإصلاح وجاءت قرائحهم بشعر اجتماعي تناولوا فيه مشكلات المجتمع وتجاربه وعيوبه ودعوا إلى العمل على تقدمه ونموه .
واستجاب الشعراء لهذه الدعوة لما آتوا من رهافة حس ، وحسن بيان، وقدرة على التعبير ،وشفافية رؤية ، فهم رواد النهضة الأدبية والفكرية وساعدهم في رسالتهم الزعماء الوطنيون ، وقادة الإصلاح أمثال : مصطفى كامل ، وسعد زغلول، ومحمد عبده، وغيرهم كأبناء مصر المخلصين في كل موقع من مواقع العمل .
وتصدى الشعراء لعلل المجتمع وعيوبه محاولين وصف العلاج الناجع لإزالة هذه العلل وتلك العيوب ويدعون إلى أفضل السبل لكي يتقدم المجتمع وكأنهم في ذلك قد خلقوا لهذه المهام لا لأنفسهم فحسب ، والشعر الاجتماعي لا يقل أهمية عن أغراض الشعر الأخرى بل هو أكثر أهمية لما يقدم من دور إيجابي في تنمية الوعي الأدبي والفكري من جهة والتعبير الحي الصادق لواقع المجتمع ، ولقد قال الشعراء المحدثون في كل الأغراض المعروفة وإن أكثروا في بعضها وأقلُّوا في البعض الآخر وقد نظموا كثيراً في الوطنية والقومية ، وأرخوا الأحداث السياسية التي مرت بها الأمة العربية ولكن الميدان الاجتماعي كان لهم أرحب ذلك أنَّ الشعر إنما يجود حين يحس الشاعر بالحرية وقد فقد الشعراء هذه الحرية في كثير من العهود
