وبعد رصد بعض الإحصائيات المتعلقة بانتشار الشعور بعدم وجود معنى في الحياة في المجتمعات الغربية، ينتقل فرانكل إلى الحديث عن العلاج بالمعنی، وهي تقنية من ابتكاره. وحيث إنه يرى أن الانتباه الشديد أو المفرط بالمشكلة التي يعاني منها المريض والتفكير الشديد فيها يفاقمان من المشكلة فإنه يطرح تقنتين من تقنيات العلاج بالمعنى ويركز عليها في هذا الكتاب مع تقديم تطبيق للتقنيتين في حالات كثيرة، والتقنيتان هما النية المتناقضة وعدم الاستغراق في التفكير.
