لم تمض ساعتان على مسيرنا نحو مدينة جوبا حتى سمعت صوت انفصال صاروخ من نوع "آر بي جي" عن قاعدته، فقد تدربت أذناي على كل أصوات الأسلحة ثقيلها وخفيفها. لم أع ما جرى إلا والعربة تنقلب بنا رأسًا على عقب. وإذا بي وحقيبة الكاميرا، بما فيها من أشرطة تسجيل، يقذفنا الانفجار على الحشائش الكثيفة. ثم تزحف العربة بعد ذلك على ظهرها لأمتار قبل أن تنفجر مصدرةً دويًا صم أذنّي وما عدت أشعر بعدها بشيء. لبرهة ظننت أنه الموت إذ لم أعد أسمع أي صوت كما غامت الدنيا في عيني. صوت موسيقى تصعد وتخبو، كأنه صوت كماني تبكي أوتاره يصاحبه "زيكا" وهو يشدو بمقطع من أغنية للمطرب الطيب عبد الله؛ أسترق السمع فأتبين أنها: "قالوا لي أنساه وأمسح من خيالك ذكرياه" غير أنها سرعان ما تتبدل بصوت التهام النيران للعربة. حاولت أن أستند على أي شيء كي أقف، وكلما أمسكت بشيء ما تحول إلى كومة من الحشائش في يدي، وإذا بأصابع كفي الأيسر لا أجدها، وإذا بالكمان يصمت للأبد! وعند رؤيتي للدم يملأ ملابسي غبت عن الدنيا وفقدت الوعي.
