يعتبر كتاب دليل DSM-5 للتشخيص الفارقي أفضل وسيلة لمساعدة الإكلينيكيين على إجراء عملية الاختيار بين الاضطرابات و الخروج بالاضطراب الأكثر توافقا مع الأعراض الظاهرة على الحالة. و ينقسم هذا الكتاب بشكل أساسي إلى ثلاثة أجزاء: الجزء الأول " التشخيص الفارقي خطوة بخطوة" يتناول الخطوات الستة التي يجب اتباعها أثناء عملية التشخيص الفارقي، الجزء الثاني " التشخيص الفارقي من خلال أشجار القرار" و يتضمن الإنطلاق من الأعراض الأساسية الظاهرة على الحالة، ثم القيام بإقصاء جميع الاحتمالات الممكنة وصولا إلى الاضطراب الأكثر توافقا، الجزء الثالث "التشخيص الفارقي باستعمال الجداول" و يتضمن جداول تمكن المختص من المقارنة بين الاضطراب الذي اختاره و الاضطرابات المشابهة التي ربما لم يأخذها بعين الاعتبار، و تعتبر هذه الجداول بمثابة وسيلة تأكيد التشخيص.
هذا الكتاب يستعمل بالموازاة مع كتاب معايير DSM-5 و لا يمكن استخدامه بشكل منفصل، لأن كل منها يكمل الآخر.
