لا يجادل أحدٌ من الـمتخصصين في أهمية فهم أبجدية الحموض النووية والتعبير الـمُورثي والتقانات الـمُستندة إليها، ولا في دورها في حياتنا الحديثة من مختلف نواحيها الصحية والاقتصادية والزراعية والصناعية والحقوقية. وفي بداية سبعينيات القرن الماضي، حدثت نقطة التحول الكبرى في علم الحياة الجزيئي (البيولوجيا الجزيئية) مع اختراع تقانة الدنا الـمأشوب، والتي أسَّسَت لظهور التقانة الحيوية الجزيئية كمنهاج بـحثي علمي جديد. ومنذ ذاك الحين، كان هناك انفجار حقيقي للمعرفة في العلوم البيولوجية؛ ومع ظهور تقانات التفاعل البوليميرازي السلسلي والتخليق الكيميائي للحموض النووية وسَلْسَلَة الحموض النووية وإنتاج الأضداد أحادية النسيلة والتطفير الـمُوجَّه، ومؤخراً، تقانات تعديل الـمَجين الـنوعية، تطور كثيراً فهمنا للحياة، ونمت كثيراً قدراتنا على تعديلها.
والآن، أصبح شائعاً أن يقوم الباحثون بـهندسة الكائنات الحية عن طريق تعديل نشاط الـمورثات الموجودة وتنظيمها، وربما إدخال سُبُلٍ جديدة كاملة. وكنتيجة للتقانة الحيوية الجزيئية، تتوافر اليوم مئات من العوامل العلاجية الجديدة، ويُتوقَّع إنتاج الكثير غيرها قريباً. هذا بالإضافة إلى العشرات من النباتات والحيوانات الـمُعَدَّلة وراثياً. وقد أصبحت تقانات الدنا حجر الزاوية في الطب الشرعي الحديث واختبار الأبوة وتحديد النسب. وتم تطوير العديد من اللقاحات الـمَأشوبة الجديدة، وهناك المزيد في الأفق؛ والقائمة تطول وتطول.
