ان الإسلام هو المسؤول عن الحفاظ على العلوم والفلسفة اليونانية القديمة - فمن خلال ترجمات من اليونانية والسريانية والفارسية الى العربية - ثم نقلها إلى الغرب من خلال الترجمات العربية إلى اللاتينية فى القرنين الثاني عشر والثالث عشر من خلال مترجمين عظام. لكن دور العرب لم يكن مقتصر على دور المترجمين فقط ، لأنه بعد فترة أولية من استيعاب العلوم اليونانية والهندية قدموا إسهامات أصيلة ، لا سيما في مجال الرياضيات وعلم الفلك والطب. و نحن مدينون لهم إلى حد كبير فى معظم العلوم فهم أساس علم المثلثات والجبر والطب الحديث. ومن الجدير بالذكر أيضًا التزامهم بالفيزياء ، حيث طبقوا منهجًا تجريبيًا للمعرفة كان مقدمة للطريقة التجريبية الحديثة. فالعلوم المفتاحية فى الإسلام مثل حساب المثلثات ، و الجبر ، والطب....الخ الخ كانوا هم الأساس فى وضع قواعدها واسسها.
