موضوع الخضر عليه السلام موضوع شغل العلماء قديماً وحديثاً، وقد أدلى فيه العلامة قطب الدين الخضيري رحمه الله بدلو ملأى بالعلم الغزير، والنظر الثاقب، فكان كتابه الأول "الروض النضر في حال الخضر" فريداً في عرضه وتناوله، سهلاً في مأخذه، حسن التقسيم؛ أجاب في بكلام فصل بيّن، على أسئلة وجهها له العلامة الكمرانيّ اليمنيّ معتمداً منهج الاستقراء والسبر والتقسيم.
فلما وصل جوابه إلى البلاد اليمينة، وقرأه العلماء، وفهموه، ثارت في نفوس بعضهم أسئلة واعتراضات أخر أرسلوا إليه بها فرد عليها في رسالته "افترض دفع الاعتراض" سؤالاً سؤالاً، وفندها اعتراضاً بعد آخر، مبدياً في الرسالتين براعة منقطعة النظير، تتجلى في كونه مكثراً من النقل، مسهباً في التحرير، مدققاً في الموازنة والترجيح.
