يعتبر المستشرق مونتغمري واط من رجال مرحلة من مراحل الاستشراق هي آخر الاستشراق الكلاسيكي وبداية الاستشراق الحديث، حيث يتضح تماماً تأثر المؤلف بالنقد التاريخي والسيسولوجي الذي أسس له كل من ثيودور نولدكه، و آرثر جيفري. كتاب “محمد النبي ورجل الدولة” الكتاب الثالث لمونتغمري واط في السيرة النبوية، وذلك بعد كتابيه المشهورين، “محمد في مكة” و “محمد في المدينة”. ويعتبر هذا الكتاب ملخصاً للكتابين السابقين.
يحتضن الكتاب تسعة فصول مع مقدمة تقنية للمترجم وملاحظات من واط حول المصادر والبيبلوغرافيا.
تفصل الفصول الثلاث الأولى عن شخصية محمد كنبي انطلق من سياقه التاريخي وتعقيدات هذا السياق مع ما كان يحيط به في ظل بداية أفول الإمبراطوريتين الفارسية والبيزنطية. من هنا تأكيد المؤلف على ضرورة قراءة محمد وفق الحاضنة التاريخية التي أولدته. هكذا، فإنه يقرأ الوحي وفق الشرط الديني الداخلي من جهة، وتموضع هذا الشرط الداخلي مع الأفكار الدينية الأوسع، أي الأفكار اليهودية والمسيحية. لكن مع إصرار النبي على فرادة ما كان يأتي به. أي تدخل في ملابسات وتفاصيل الوحي والإرادة للخروج بدين جديد.
بينما تأتي الفصول اللاحقة لتشير إلى الامكانات التي تميزت بها شخصية محمد كرجل دولة بدأ من اختياره للمكان الذي هاجر إليه (يثرب المدينة) مرورا بطرائقه وأساليبه لتوسيع رقعة نفوذه، وليس انتهاء برغبة منافسة الفرس في زمن انحدارهم مع التأكيد على السعي الجاد لتكوين أمة على نمط الفرس والرومان. ثم ليأتي الفصل الأخير كتقييم للمؤلف حول شخصية محمد.
