يأتي نشر كتاب «بحر الكلام» في إطار بيان جهود أهل السنة والجماعة في مواجهة الأفكار التي دخلت إلى الأمة المسلمة نتيجة اتساع رقعة الدولة الإسلامية إبّان الفتوحات، والتقاء المسلمين بثقافات وأفكار ومعتقدات أجنبية عن طبيعة التفكير الذي سبق أن كان سائدًا في بلاد الإسلام الأولى؛ حيث لم يكن المنهج القائم المتجرِّد عن دعم الدليل العقلي لينجح في مواجهة هؤلاء المبتدعة؛ لأن الحجج العقلية البحتة لا بد أن تُواجَه بالطريقة نفسها. كما يهدف إلى إظهار أثر نفيس من تراث علّامة كبيرٍ من علماء المسلمين، بالإضافة إلى محاولة تصحيح صورة مغلوطة منتشرة عن أهل السنة والجماعة من الماتريدية والأشعرية. وقد سُبق النصُّ المحقَّق من الكتاب بمقدمةٍ ضمّت ثلاثة فصول؛ تحدّث أولها عن علم الكلام بين الدراسة المنهجية والواقع الحالي، وترجم الثاني للمؤلف رحمه الله تعالى، وبيّن الفصل الثالث نسبة الكتاب لمؤلفه، ووصف النسخ الخطيّة العشرة المعتمدة في التحقيق، وعمل محقّق الكتاب، فجاء عملًا علميًّا متكاملًا.
